Money, money, money: how important is the cost of your surgery?

woman-money-cash-coinsOne of the biggest selling points of Secret Surgery is that we offer high quality procedures for a fraction of the price that you would pay for on Harley Street. However, not everyone is sold on the cost of our surgeries – and we still face cynicism from the British media, despite our excellent track record.

So that leads us to the question – how important is money when you’re considering cosmetic surgery? Should you let a cheap cost put you off? Should you let a high price tag twist your arm?

Well, the honest answer is that it all depends. We always stress how important it is to ask your surgeon or consultant about anything and everything that concerns you, and money is definitely included in this!

If the prices you’ve been quoted seem much cheaper than you’ve been told elsewhere, then it’s important to find out why. If the clinic is skimping on quality, experience or safety to save you money, then no – that’s not a good saving! It might end up costing you more in the long run, and, of course, your health is far more valuable than your savings.

However, some overseas surgeries – including ours – can offer cheaper surgeries without compromising on our work. The cost of living in many other parts of Europe is much lower than it is in the UK, which means that the the cost of medical care is somewhat lower, too. This doesn’t mean the medical care isn’t good, though – it’s just economics.

Likewise, this doesn’t mean that the care you get in more expensive clinics is any better. Just as you’ll pay more to rent a flat in London than you would in Wroclaw, you’ll pay more to rent a surgeon, too!

Angela Chouaib to feature in Surgery Abroad documentary

angela chouaib secret surgery woman magazineJust over a week ago, our dear Angela – the MD and founder of Secret Surgery, if you don’t already know, spent the day being filmed by a documentary team filming a show based on following a patients journey through surgery abroad- and it’s all about good folk like you and me, who opt for surgery abroad because it’s more affordable, better, and friendlier!

Angela’s obviously a great person to ask about the details of how these companies work and why they’re so attractive, but patients also play a big part in answering these questions. The documentary follows some patients who have chosen to undergo surgery abroad in Poland, exploring their experiences – the highs and the lows – and really looking at what is offered by companies like ours.

We’re glad to see surgery tourism getting some good press – there’s been a lot of that, lately – and we’re looking forward to seeing the show air. We don’t want to give too many details away about what’s going to be revealed in the documentary, but suffice it to say we think you all should watch it!

Keep reading for more details of what to expect, and watch this space – we’ll let you know before it airs.

Exclusive Angela Chouaib Interview: Part Three

20121216-0339smallYep, here it is – the last part in our exclusive Angela Chouaib interview. The gorgeous Angela was interviewed by the equally gorgeous Jenny Southan of Business Traveller, where she shared all of the juicy details about the ins and outs of Secret Surgery, as well as the cosmetic surgery holiday industry. Read on to find out which questions Jenny saved until last.

What advice would you give someone looking to tag on some time to a business trip for medical treatment overseas if they have never done it before?

Please do your research, ask all the appropriate questions relating to the procedure you are considering and make an informed choice. Secret Surgery does attract quite a lot of city Executives that never want a peer to find out they’ve had a nip or tuck; so by doing this away from Harley Street and recovering in a luxury hotel with business facilities it allows them to still stay connected with their business during the recuperation period.

What happens if something goes wrong during, or as a consequence of, your medical treatment overseas? What rights and protection do you have? Do you need special insurance?

Things might go wrong in surgery as we all know no surgery is risk free! but it happens rarely, and there should always be ways to fix or reverse any unexpected complications! The more you research your procedure and surgeon will allow you to make an informed choice. These are the kind of questions you should be thinking about asking in your consultation:

  • Group meal at Pod Freda

Are there back-up medical facilities available if I become ill during the procedure?

  • Does the clinic have insurance to cover malpractice or errors?
  • Which company is your insurance with, and what is the level of cover?
  • Are further treatments due to complications covered in the original cost of my treatment?
  • What is the surgeons complication rates?
  • How is the Hospitals Infection control managed and monitored?
  • Its really important to get the lines of communication open… Ask if anyone has had a similar procedure and experience a complication and what did the surgeon do to rectify it? Ask about healing stages, aftercare and associated timescales…

You can also take out a specialist Medical Travel Insurance Policy; see: http://www.medicaltravelshield.com/

Do you have to involve your GP when arranging medical treatment overseas?

GP Involvement is minimal – it is somewhat up to the patient to discuss this with them which we always recommend. We occasionally ask patients who present with medical conditions such as depression, blood pressure issues or diabetes to speak to their GP about their plans and get their GP’s advice/approval that they feel they are under control and suitable candidates.
